Nord Pool, Europe's leading power market, is marking the 20th anniversary of the establishment of a fully integrated Nordic power market.
The 1st October 2020 marks 20 years since the Danish region of Zealand joined Nord Pool to complete the journey creating one common Nordic power market, bringing the rest of Denmark into a market that already encompassed Norway, Finland, Sweden and the Jutland region. The integration of Danish power resources was the culmination of some seven years of work by Nord Pool, alongside Transmission System Operators, producers and customers across the Nordic region, to create seamless and integrated Nordic cross-border power trading.
Commenting on the anniversary, Kari Ekelund Thørud, Nord Pool CEO, said: "Nord Pool was, working closely with a number of important stakeholders, truly a pioneer of joined-up power trading, realising competition and modernising the way in which power could be bought and sold across borders, to the benefit of consumers.
"We are proud that the integrated market model Nord Pool delivered two decades ago has served as the blueprint for pan-European power trading today. Much has changed in the last 20 years, but Nord Pool remains at the forefront of developing simple, efficient and secure power trading, and delivering true power exchange competition, across Europe."
