During 2021 a total of 963 TWh* of power was traded through Nord Pool (made up of buy volume of 462 TWh and sell volume of 501 TWh).
The Nordic and Baltic day-ahead market traded 722.5 TWh and the UK day-ahead market 147.3 TWh, while Nord Pool’s central European (CE) day-ahead market (covering Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, The Netherlands and Poland) achieved 68.2 TWh of power traded by year end. Total intraday trading, across all markets, for the year stood at 25.18 TWh.
Commenting on the strong trading volumes seen in 2021, Fredrik Bomstad, interim CEO at Nord Pool, said: “In yet another challenging year for both the energy sector, and the wider world - including some unprecedented power market volatility - it has been good to record steady annual numbers here at Nord Pool. It is my view that, despite our having to live and work in unpredictable times, this illustrates that our many customers across Europe, irrespective of their size or where they trade from, continue to invest great trust in Nord Pool to deliver simple, efficient and secure power trading.
“Power market competition has now broadened and become better established throughout Europe. That fact alone makes it increasingly important that Nord Pool should continue to deliver robust volumes like those we are seeing today. The strength of Nord Pool’s markets is ample testament that our customers in the Nordic and Baltic region, in the UK and in central Europe, like and trust our competitive and efficient power trading offering.”
The average system price in the Nordics during 2021 was 62.19 EUR/MWh.
