Wishing Customers the Best for 2021
We want to start the first Nord Pool newsletter of 2021 by wishing all our customers a very peaceful and prosperous New Year.
We look forward to working with you to deliver simple, efficient and secure power trading in the year to come.
New Nord Pool GB Market
Nord Pool started the New Year with the successful launch of its standalone GB day-ahead power auction.
Commenting on the success of the new GB power trading market, Emma McKiernan, Director Nordic, Baltic, UK and Ireland at Nord Pool, said: “We have worked closely with customers and other key stakeholders to deliver a standalone auction which is robust, trustworthy and works well for them. It is gratifying that that work has now been endorsed by the volume of trade that we have seen in the new market’s first few days.”
The launch of the new market has been necessitated by Great Britain no longer being part of the European Internal Energy Market (IEM) as of 1st January 2021.
Nord Pool Welcomes Energy Law Change
Nord Pool has welcomed news of an important change to the German Renewables Energy Act (EEG).
The new legislation (EEG 2021) changed the definition of ‘power exchange’ to include all NEMOs offering trading services in the German bidding zone, rather than the previous, much more restricted definition.
This opens the door for much broader and fairer power market competition in Germany and across Europe.
Commenting on the law change Dr. Birgit Kunze, Senior Legal Counsel at Nord Pool, said: “This is something Nord Pool has campaigned for, for a considerable time. It opens up the German power market to true competition between power exchanges, which is good news for Nord Pool’s many central western European customers, and for end consumers too.”

Physical and Financial Power Markets Course
Nord Pool Academy will be providing our popular Physical and Financial Power Markets course – both physically and online – in Oslo on Wednesday 3rd and Thursday 4th February 2021, giving an introduction to Europe’s leading short- and long-term power markets. This is also a good refresher, covering all major recent changes to the energy markets and potential future developments.
‘The Physical and Financial Power Markets’ sees experts from Nord Pool, Statnett, AFRY and Montel providing valuable insights and answers to your questions.
Held in English, over two days, the course will unravel the complexity of the power market, whether you are a trader, investor or working in the back or front office. It will be equally helpful for those with a more general interest in the increasingly important energy sector.

ACER REMIT Fees Decided
After last summer’s European Commission public consultation on the implementation of ACER REMIT fees, the Commission has now decided on fee levels and how they will be paid.
In short, ACER will specify fees per market participant based on the number of transactions reported in 2020 and, by the end of January 2021, forward an invoice to Registered Reporting Mechanisms (RRMs), which must collect fees from market participants.
Nord Pool will start REMIT invoicing as soon as we receive information from ACER and will include the ACER REMIT fee, specifying the amount, in the same invoice as for the ordinary Nord Pool service fee.
The Commission’s decision applies from 1st January 2021 – details can be found here, with a ‘Questions and Answers’ document providing more information here.
A 2021 update of Nord Pool ‘Data and Reporting Services Fee Schedule' on will follow.
