At Nord Pool we enter 2022 with a positive outlook, looking forward to working closely with our customers across Europe to continue to deliver simple, efficient and secure power trading.
Collaboration and competence-sharing are at the heart of our market development. In the spirit of meeting the future together, we start the year by wishing all our customers the very best for 2022 in the hope that we will be able to meet you in person again.
Nord Pool 2021 Trading Figures
Nord Pool has announced trading figures for 2021, with the year producing steady numbers across our markets.
During 2021 a total of 963 TWh of power was traded through Nord Pool. The Nordic and Baltic day-ahead market traded 722.5 TWh and the UK day-ahead market 147.3 TWh, while Nord Pool’s central Europe day-ahead market (covering Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland, Luxembourg and The Netherlands) achieved 68.2 TWh of power traded by year end. Total intraday trading for the year stood at 25 TWh.
Commenting on the strong trading volumes seen in 2021, Fredrik Bomstad, interim CEO at Nord Pool, said: “In yet another challenging year for both the energy sector, and the wider world - including some unprecedented market volatility - it has been good to record steady annual numbers here at Nord Pool. It is my view that, despite our having to live and work in unpredictable times, this illustrates that our many customers across Europe, irrespective of their size or where they trade from, continue to invest great trust in Nord Pool to deliver simple, efficient and secure power trading.”

Disappointment at ACER CACM Proposal
Nord Pool was deeply disappointed that the Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER), in its recent proposal to amend the Capacity Allocation and Congestion Management (CACM) Regulation, saw fit to recommend the establishment of a single legal entity to perform all market coupling operation (MCO) tasks.
With this proposal ACER went against the advice and wishes of the vast majority of NEMOs, TSOs and market participants.
Nord Pool, together with all European NEMOs and TSOs, proposed a solution closer to what we have today – a solution which would be more robust, more flexible in the face of the market’s ‘green shift’ and more cost- and time-efficient than that which ACER, unfortunately, opted for.

Popular Courses for 2022
Nord Pool Academy hosts two of its most enduringly popular courses in early 2022, with places filling-up fast.
There is still time to join the Academy’s Physical and Financial Power Markets Course on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th January, where a series of subject experts will explain the ins and outs of Europe’s leading short- and long-term power markets, including examination of recent changes and potential future developments.
Following that, on Tuesday 8th February, the Nord Pool Certified Compliance Course will see our dedicated Market Surveillance Department team analysing key subjects in the European power market’s rapidly changing regulatory environment.
Both courses are available as live stream or with in-person attendance (subject to applicable Covid restrictions). To find out more and sign up visit the Academy page.
Granular Exchange – UK Webinar
Late last year Nord Pool announced, together with our partner Granular, plans to jointly develop a spot market for hourly renewable certificates.
The first pilot project will take place in the UK, with the design work serving as a basis for developing further markets across Europe.
We would now like to invite all interested participants to join an exclusive webinar, co-hosted by Nord Pool and Granular, on Wednesday 26th January at 4pm CET (3pm UK time) to learn more about the project and how to get involved.
